Today is National Good Samaritan Day, which celebrates kindness and helping others in need. Good Samaritan Day honors the death of 28-year-old Catherine “Kitty” Genovese, who was brutally stabbed to death near her home in New York City. Kitty’s death was especially disturbing because nearly 40 bystanders did nothing while she screamed for help, and it took a half hour before a neighbor finally called the police. Too often people stand by instead of stand up or care more about themselves than the people around them. Good Samaritan Day serves as an important reminder to help others, whether it’s a friend, family member, or a complete stranger in need.
In honor of Good Samaritan Day, plan on doing something nice for someone today.
And answer today’s question: What is the nicest thing a stranger has done for you?
